Remembering the life of James M. Perkins
The JMPMF directly supports the Total Sunshine Inc. School Grade Incentive. Program. This program rewards students for academic tenacity and facilitates the TSI Annual School Grade Rewards Ceremony. James Perkins was an intended recipient of the honor, rewards, and TS Team Membership at our 1st Annual Ceremony yet met his untimely departure a few weeks before its occurrence. He was 14 years old and Salutatorian of Johnson Middle School (Class of 2009) in DC. He was also the recipient of many awards in many subjects, including English, Science, and French. "Lil James" excelled in mathematics.
In 2008, he received many awards in mathematics, including the Apangea Mathematics Award, in which he became National Champion for the District of Columbia Public School.
A musical tribute has been made in every Rewards Ceremony for James Perkins. We are especially honored to hold a memorial fund for him at his parents' request (James Jackson and Patricia Perkins) to support the program that brought us together. We are saddened to have lost "Lil James" but are inspired to see his parents' steadfast dedication in supporting academically tenacious youth.
While James Jackson and Patricia Perkins could have become bitter and refused to assist other youth, they have shown extraordinary resilience in their dedication to support youth who are on the road to success.
"With our mission of 'Promoing Smiles' at Total Sunshine, Inc., we are truly inspired by the kindness and giving spirit of James Perkins's parents. Their positive attitudes towards helping youth did not die with their son. Their kind and selfless actions, at the core, embody the spirit of the mission of Total Sunshine, Inc.
Although tragedy has brought us together, I am so glad to have met the parents of James Perkins. Their ceaseless support humbles me." ―Merilyn C. Holmes, President TSI.
TSI's future goal for this program is to facilitate "rewards" nationwide for high school Valedictorians and Salutatorians (laptops for college). We aim to facilitate our annual ceremony in our nation's capital for all top graduates to receive their "rewards" and encouragement from our nation's leaders and relevant role models. Also, "rewards" during the school year for exemplary report cards for all students. We aim to support as many youths as possible with tools and encouragement for scholastic success. Though a tragedy has beset James Perkins...
His legacy of studious tenacity in academics shall be continuously highlighted and used as inspiration to all students and assist many in their educational endeavors!
